This is a bowl I made on the wheel for my choice project. I had to learn how to pull up correctly in order to make this. Even though I successfully pulled this project I still struggle with it quite a bit when on the wheel. I am determined to get the hang of it one day though so I haven't given up. I used the glaze colors white and matt turquoise. The mixture of these colors made there be a contrast of darker and lighter values of turquoise. The rim of my bowl is a perfect circle, which eases my minor OCD. That circle was formed into the bowl you see here by adding depth and using space. The finished bowl came out with an overall smooth texture. Its evenly smooth all over the entire project, which again is very appeasing to the OCD. The colors used balance each other out very nicely and brings the piece together in a perfect harmony. I dripped glaze on the outside which adds a sense of movement, making it look as if the glaze is still dripping down the outside of the bowl. This project came out perfectly proportioned. So much so that my mom didn't believe that I had made it at first. She goes, "But it's like perfect!", I simply responded with a thank you. I can't wait to eat some tomato soup out of this bowl with my grilled cheese.

This is a lantern I made using the firm slab method. I put leaves and a tree on it because I absolutely love nature and truly feel that it is under appreciated. I had to learn how to pinch little coils in the corners of the walls in order to make sure it stayed together. Doing this with the lid was much harder than the base. I had to use very straight lines when cutting out my shapes in order to get it in the perfect form with adequate space. I chose to put the design (leaves) on there in attempts to add more texture to the lantern. The contrast between the colors really add emphasis to the leaves and make them pop out. The leaf patterns are placed so that they balance each other, but also show movement with all of the leaves going different directions. I had to cut my lid down in order to make it proportional to the base. Everything came together in complete harmony and I couldn't be more satisfied. My lantern gives me happiness because I am so beyond satisfied with how it turned out. The over all mood of the lantern makes me think of nature, which is my happy place. Now when it's raining and I'm stuck indoors I can have my happy place here with me. The turquoise is the blue sky, the candle light is the sun, and the leaves on the lantern are the nature. I'll never be sad again.
I This is a little mug I made when using the slab cup method. It didn't come out looking quite as I would have liked, but it is my first time. I plan on making another cup that looks nicer, however I will still love this mug because it is my first, and we all have to start somewhere. I rolled the clay (which I had to learn how to do) out into a flat slab. I then cut the shape needed for the cup out. After I had my shape I attempted to put a design in it, then using a rolling pin I made it into a cup. I then cut a little strip of clay and made the handle. After assembling all parts of my cup together and firing it, I began to glaze. I used turquoise, white, mystery blue, shatter green, and clear glaze on this cup. Unfortunately the glaze didn't come out very smoothly. I get an overall mood of messy enchantment from this cup. The messy of course because this cup is kind of a mess, but that's okay because it relates to me in that way. I get the enchantment because of the design on the cup. When I look at it and the color of the inside I think of an enchanted sea.
This is a coil pot that I made that I hope to use as a pot for one of my plants when they get mature enough to transfer. I made this pot starting with a pinch pot for the base and then making individual coils and adding them on top of said pinch pot. In doing this I learned to slip and score very effectively because if not done right, this project won't be successful whatsoever. In order to decide what coils to create I had to look at the space available on what I already had assembled. I then had to think about what shape the clay needs to be in to fit in this space. I had to use a steady rhythm when rolling out the coils in order to get an emphasis on each coil, but bring them all together in harmony. The contrast between all the different textures and colors of each coil allows the pot to come together balanced. I get a sort of beautiful mysterious feeling from this, much like one would get from the deep blue sea. I absolutely love my coil pot and look forward to raising a plant baby in it.
This is a turtle. I made it starting out with a pinch pot, then adding the head, legs, and tail. I then carved hexagons into the back to give it the design of a turtle shell. I used value to create the weight and thickness. I had to visualize the shape I wanted and form the clay to make it into what I wanted. There is the colors of green, black, and tan/clear on the project. The turtles belly has depth in order to allow me to use it as a dish. Carving the shell also gave it the texture of a turtle shell. All of the art elements used allowed the final project to come out balanced. I didn't quite get the contrast of colors I was hoping for, but I'm still content. The pattern on the shell really adds emphasis to the turtle. All of the pieces came together in harmony creating an artwork that I'm overall satisfied with. I think I did pretty well for my first ever ceramics project. I love my turtle, Shelly. My turtle makes me really happy because it's adorable and I love turtles. It came out exactly how I wanted. |
